Visiting the beach in winter means plenty of time to take things slow. No crowds. No need to rush around. It is the perfect time to book a beach rental and enjoy down time. 

There are, however, great winter activities if you choose to venture out. 

The 19th Wild Dunes Author Event & Weekend takes place Jan. 13-14 at Wild Dunes Resort. Meet your favorite authors and book lovers, and enjoy lively conversation. The 2 p.m. Sunday program with Mary Alice Monroe, features William Kent Krueger, Shelby Van Pelt and Stacy Willingham. The $65 general admission for Sunday’s program includes a signature cocktail, appetizers, coffee bar and dessert. Events on Saturday include a Morning Mimosas Book Launch and a 1-4 p.m. excursion to Dewees Island with authors. Treat yourself to a stay in a Wild Dunes Resort rental and enjoy this literary weekend. 

Love vintage cars? Muscle cars? Come out for Cars & Coffee, which takes place at Freshfields Village from 9-11 a.m. on Jan. 20. Modern prestige vehicles and classics line the Village streets. Drive your car or admire the ones on display while you sip coffee, available for purchase at Java Java

How does 45,000 pounds of oysters sound? The Lowcountry Oyster Festival at Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens on Feb. 4 touts itself as the world’s largest oyster festival. The 40th anniversary will include live music on the main stage, raw oyster eating and shucking contests, wine, a selection of domestic and imported beers, specialty cocktails, a Children’s Area and a “Food Court” showcasing a variety of local favorite restaurants to satisfy everyone’s taste. General admission is $25. 

Do you enjoy watching someone master the craft of golf? Check out some of the region’s best young golfers at the Kiawah Amateur Golf Tournament on Feb. 17-18 at The Ocean Course. The tournament features boys and girls 18 and under on the challenging 18-hole course.  

In case you missed the January date, Cars & Coffee happens again on Feb. 17 at Freshfields Village. Take your Saturday morning stroll from 9-11 a.m. to view the vintage vehicles lined up along the Village streets. Enjoy coffee, tea and breakfast goodies available for purchase at Java Java

Take part in the 20th Mardi Crawl on Feb. 24 at Shem Creek, hosted by the Lowcountry Parrot Head Club. Attendees pay a registration, then travel to participating restaurants to play interactive games, enjoy food and drink specials, and listen to live music. 

Or sit on your deck and catch the ocean breeze. That’s good, too.
