Fall means fun on the South Carolina coast. In addition to mild temperatures for getting outdoors, there are also lots of festivities and activities to keep you busy. Check out a few of our favorites and pencil in your must-attend events.

The craft beer scene is hopping in Charleston, with 30 breweries and brewpubs opening in recent years. To celebrate, the 7th Charleston Beer Week is set Sept. 7-14. Enjoy a wide variety of craft beer brands with a number of events set in various venues.

High-Flying Fun

See some of the world’s best men’s and women’s professional water skiers during the Malibu Open Professional Waterski Festival on Sept. 13-14 at Trophy Lake on John’s Island. Athletes compete for more than $70,000 in prize money in the slalom and jump events. Competition concludes with an exciting men’s night jump finals on Saturday night when jumpers travel in excess of 220 feet in the dark.

Coming Together

MOJA, a Celebration of Africa-American and Caribbean Arts, will be held Sept. 26-Oct. 6 at various venues around Charleston. It’s all about community, unity, and diversity and celebrates dance, music, food, and art. Check often for an updated calendar of events.

Salute to Veterans

“We the People: Portraits of Veterans in America” Exhibition by Mary Whyte will be on display at the Charleston City Waterfront Gallery from Oct. 25 - Dec. 22. Portraits of Veterans in America features images of current-day veterans of all ages, from all walks of life and from every state.

Whyte's 50 large-scale watercolors capture the essence of what it means to be an American. The opening weekend, on Oct. 25-27, includes two premier concerts with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, gallery tours, brunch on the USS Yorktown and other ticketed events honoring featured guest veterans.

Lighting Up the Night

Lights of Magnolia Chinese lanterns will glow for four months beginning Nov. 15 at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. The Gardens partnered with the Zigong Lantern Group in China to present "Lights of Magnolia: Reflections of a Cultural Exchange." The lantern festival features custom-designed installations of large-scale thematically unified lanterns, a fusion of historic Chinese cultural symbols and images that represent the flora and fauna of Magnolia.

Work off the Turkey

Kiawah Island Resort will hold its annual Turkey Trot at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 28. This race offers a one-mile walk or a run on the beach for families, beginners, or competitive runners. If you’re not up for running, come out for the Fall Festival from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Celebrate the season with pumpkin bowling, lawn games, face painting, arts and crafts, and more. Admission is free.
