Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial first day of summer vacation. Commemorated on the last Monday of May, this year Memorial Day falls on May 30. The holiday allows families to make a three-day getaway, or stretch it into a week-long vacation.

Salute Our Heroes

In addition to being a great time for a family vacation, Memorial Day offers an opportunity to honor those who died in military service. A great way to do that is a visit to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant. The museum offers one million square feet of exhibits, including the USS Yorktown, USS Laffey, the three-acre Vietnam Experience, 28 historic aircraft, and the Medal of Honor Museum.

 Shuck ‘em

A time-honored Kiawah Island tradition is the Mingo Point Oyster Roast and BBQ. Guests of all ages will enjoy feasting on fresh oysters that were roasted over an open fire during the May event, which is set Saturday, May 28, with seatings at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. If you don’t eat oysters, don’t worry. There are also BBQ specialties, a Lowcountry boil, and more for you to savor. The evening also includes family fun and live music, all right on the banks of the Kiawah River. Reserve your spot to take part in this delicious event.

Hit the Beach

Whether you stay on Kiawah IslandSeabrook IslandWild Dunes Resort, or Isle of Palms, your vacation rental is sure to be steps or a bike ride from a spectacular beach. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, a beach hat, and a towel. Then just relax while you enjoy the sound of the waves and the feel of an ocean breeze.

Listen to the Music

Freshfields Village on Kiawah Island offers a special two-night Music on the Green Concert Series on Friday, May 27, and Saturday, May 28. Bring a blanket or chairs and head to the Village Green for this free outdoor concert!

Cook Out

Many of our vacation properties offer outdoor grills as an amenity, so cook up some barbecue ribs, burgers, and hot dogs. Barbecuing is a perfect holiday weekend activity and allows you plenty of time to spend with the family. After all, that’s what this vacation is all about.

 Make a Splash

Book a vacation rental with a private pool or take advantage of the community pool available at most properties. The kids can jump in while you grill the burgers. Or take the family down to the beach and play in the waves. Either way, you’re building those memories.
