Things to Do

For hundreds of years, the Lowcountry has inspired artists and craftsmen. Its close connection to the natural world evokes specific skills that are an important part of the region’s culture. Wild Dunes Resort offers several workshops for those who want to pick up the crafts.

Basket Weaving 101

Learn the traditional Lowcountry art of Sweetgrass weaving from local basket maker, Sarah Edwards-Hammond. She comes from a long line of basket makers and has passed down the tradition to her own children, grandchildren, and others in the community. Call 877-230-9224 to book a session.

Playing with Fire

Take home the perfect Lowcountry souvenir by becoming your own blacksmith through the Resort’s Playing with Fire workshop. Choose from a fire poker, oyster shucker, bottle opener or iron rose to forge in the fire to take home as a memento.

Go Blue!

Indigo is South Carolina’s blue gold. Take the Indigo Dye Workshop to learn how the indigo dye is made. Participants practice Shibori techniques (ferment, add lye, dry and grind) to create a set of napkins or scarves. No experience is necessary. It’s another chance for a great souvenir as participants leave with a handmade indigo piece. Call 877-230-9224 to book a session.

Taste of the Lowcountry

Take a delish class from local chocolatiers with the Resort’s Cocoa Academy. Discover the roots of cocoa, how it’s cultivated, factors that affect the flavor and more. Taste a variety of chocolate from around the world and gain an understanding of this favorite treat. Call 843-620-2162 to make a reservation.

Kiawah Resort also offers classes like a weaving workshop and glass fusing. Find out more about their schedule by calling 843-768-6001.
