The Low Country of South Carolina is an area with culture, geography, architecture, and food all its own. It includes the Sea Islands and Charleston County, where you’ll find Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, and Seabrook Island.

We’re sharing details on fun ways to explore the Low Country and truly appreciate all it has to offer.

Get Outside

Capture the spirit of the Low Country with outdoor activities. Kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking, and biking all give you a glimpse into its wild areas. Fort Moultrie in Sullivan’s Island has outdoor activities including birding and nature walks. You can also book an excursion with an outfitter to get out on the water and see the area from a different viewpoint.

Explore a Plantation

Roots run deep in the Low Country. One way to get a sense of the role it played in America’s history is to visit a plantation home. Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens in Mt. Pleasant and the Charleston Tea Plantation on Wadmalaw Island provide a history lesson you can’t get from a textbook.

South Carolina’s Military Past

A Lowcountry vacation isn’t complete without a visit to Patriots Point and the Naval & Maritime Museum. It’s a hands-on history lesson aboard the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier, USS Laffey Destroyer, USS Clamagore Submarine and lots of aircraft. The Vietnam Experience Exhibit is a fully immersive display depicting a U.S. Marine Corps firebase during the Tet Offensive. Other exhibits pay tribute to America’s brave men and women who served.

Low Country Cooking

Enjoy authentic cuisine like broiled seafood, braised short ribs, shrimp and grits and fried shrimp over pimento cheese. Many restaurants in Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island serve up traditional favorites. Try Acme Low Country Kitchen in Isle of Palms for breakfast, brunch or dinner. The Long Island Cafe in Isle of Palms is another favorite with rich, creamy she-crab soup, jumbo lump crab cakes, and East Coast oysters.
